The esteemed New England Journal of Medicine recently posted a fun video about the dangers of distracted driving. While we all know the dangers of talking on the cell phone, this study confirms that tasks that taking our eyes off the road results in an increased risk of an at-fault motor vehicle collision.
The study looked at the difference between experienced and novice drivers (those under 19 years old) and found that both groups have a similar risk of at-fault collisions when using cell phones, as that task takes the drivers eyes off the road. While this study looked at cell phones, any distracted driving can be very dangerous. Keeping your eyes on the road will help cut your chances of being the cause of an accident and may help you avoid one caused by someone else. Not to sound too much like your drivers ed instructor, but:
- Getting there safely is more important than getting there quickly;
- Pull off the road if you need to return a call or a text;
- Keep your eyes on the road and your hands on the wheel
